Retinitis Pigmentosa

Lisa is one of my patients who have retinitis pigmentosa. TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) can treat diseases like these. The acupuncture treatment for this is to insert needles in acupuncture points related to the eye. They are usually located close to the eyeball. These points can also be used for a variety of eye related problems such as optic atrophy, central retinal artery occlusion and central retinitis. The two most important points are the jingming points (BL 1) located in the inner corners of both eyes.  Herbs used for treatment would be ones that help develop eyesight. The treatments may vary slightly and will depend on a personal diagnosis.

The TCM diagnosis process consists of four steps: observations, interrogation, scent and sounds, and pulse reading. From this I can find the reason behind the symptoms and develop a treatment plan.

中医对眼科有独到的方法。在看病人时，一样是遵循“望闻问切 ”的原则，以中医理论为指导。Lisa是我其中一个眼科的病人。她11年前开始有夜盲症，6年前开始白天也慢慢看不见了，只有模糊的影子。她看了很多专科医生，最后说她得了“视网膜色素变性”，是一种遗传病。目前西医学没有办法，病人会慢慢失明。我用了中医的诊断方法。判断她为肝阴虚，用了一段时间的针灸，主要穴位是睛明穴。目前有一定疗效，其视力有所上升，但因病程太久，不知能恢复到什么程度。若病人能在夜盲时就诊，会容易很多。
